The Community Presbyterian Church is very proud to have the historic Camp Stoneman Chapel as its home. Our minister looks out on faces of all ages, from a wide variety of backgrounds, with diverse interests and professions. We thrive on our diversity and welcome the creative possibilities that come from our different viewpoints.
Located approximately 40 miles east of San Francisco in Contra Costa County, Pittsburg and East County has changed dramatically since the end of World War II. The population in the vicinity of the church has grown significantly as a number of new homes and suburban commuters have been moved into this area.
Our Sunday worship service observes the liturgical calendar and follows the Revised Common Lectionary, which contains the scripture readings for each Sunday that follows a three-year cycle. The service is generally traditional in order, but with informal leanings.
Our traditional worship service is enriched by an excellent choir director, an adult choir, and a bell choir. The youth of the church conduct the entire worship service one Sunday each spring.
The bell choir performs several times during the year. Summer also brings our week long Vacation Bible School program for children of the church and the community
Alternative Worship Team: We have a special music team that is introducing the congregation and community to an additional musical style once a month - on the fourth Sunday of every month. The Alternative Worship Team leads a service with a muliticultural mixture of jazz, African, and contemporary Christian music in an informal, participatory, post-modern service. We hope that this format for a worship service grows into it's own service so that we can have both a Traditional and an Alternative service to reach out to the diverse musical, theological, and cultural needs of East County.
At Community Presbyterian Church we believe that the presence of children in worship is important for all of us. It is only by being present as the community worships and shares its joys and concerns that children are able to grow in the faith. And the presence of children in our midst is a constant reminder of how we are all to be before God -- open and vulnerable.
Sunday School: for all ages begins at 9:09 and wraps up around 9:50, before the 10:00 am service. Because we believe that our children are a vital part of our church family, our children remain in our services. We offer a nursery for infants and Pre-Kindergarteners after the children's message in the middle of the service.
We celebrate the Sacrament of the Lord's Supper as a joyful feast for all the children of God on the first Sunday of each month, as well as on Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, and other special times. All are welcome to participate and celebrate with us this sustaining and empowering sacrament.
In following the teachings of Jesus Christ, the Community Presbyterian Church of Pittsburg manifests being part of the body of Christ in the world by:
· Expressing Gods love as an open, inviting and accepting community of faith
· Providing opportunities for worship, fellowship, and spiritual growth
· Working toward a more just society by sharing generously our time, talents and resources with each other, our community, and the world.
Community Presbyterian Church has a high regard for mission outreach. The church supports global ministries by contributing through special offerings such as the One Great Hour of Sharing, the Peacemaking Offering, and the Christmas Joy Offerings. We support our local food bank, and we collect food for organizations and individual families as well as Christmas gifts for the needy. When emergencies or special needs arise, our congregation has been very generous. Many individual church members are also very active in the community in education and philanthropic organizations.
We are a congregation of The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) which has approximately 2.2 million members, 11,000 congregations and 21,000 ordained ministers.
